Thank you for considering me to be involved in your care.
I understand the stress associated with infertility, perinatal loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding and caring for tiny human beings first-hand as a mother, sister, friend to other moms, and from my clinical work with hundreds of women during the perinatal period. I have applied the lessons from my own life experiences, training in medical school and residency, specialized training in perinatal mental health and valuable insights that I have gained from my patients to provide quality care with a holistic approach. I tailor treatment to fit my patients’ individual needs and preferences, offering a combination of psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and aspects of integrative medicine.
While I enjoy all facets of Women’s Mental Health, I am particularly passionate about working with women during the perinatal period since it is such a pivotal time for expectant parents and their families. Whether pregnancy is planned or a total surprise, all sorts of complicated thoughts and feelings can arise and it is important to know that you’re not alone. Since the majority of postpartum depression actually starts before delivery (with depression beginning prior to conception or during pregnancy and persisting), addressing mental health concerns as early as possible in the perinatal period can significantly reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression and other adverse psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, taking care of your mental health when trying to conceive, during pregnancy or postpartum can positively impact fertility, development of the fetus and baby, and can reduce the risk of pregnancy complications.
I attended medical school at the University of the Caribbean and completed my residency at Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine (now affiliated with University of Massachusetts Medical School). I developed an interest in Women’s Mental Health and Perinatal Psychiatry as a third year resident, when I happened to be pregnant myself. I devoted much of my fourth year of residency to specialized training in Women’s Mental Health and collaborated with the Baystate Ob/Gyn department to start a Women’s Mental Health clinic. I have continued to work at Baystate since 2013 as an attending psychiatrist and Medical Director of the Baystate Women’s Mental Health Program. I also work as a consulting psychiatrist for Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program (MCPAP) for Moms.
I am an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Baystate Medical Center/University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and love to teach and learn from students, residents, and my colleagues. I was honored with the Excellence in Resident Education award at Baystate/UMMS in 2019 and with the Hampden District Medical Society Community Clinician of the Year Award in 2020.
My special clinical interests in addition to perinatal psychiatry include, integrative women’s health, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders, transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroconvulsive therapy.
Is this the right practice for you?
While I value working with people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, this practice is devoted to helping individuals manage their mental health during the perinatal period. If you are pregnant, up to eighteen months postpartum, planning for a future pregnancy or struggling with infertility, and would like to explore medication or alternative options for managing your mental health, please contact my office if you would like to schedule a consultation.
In this solo private telepsychiatry practice, there are some services that I cannot provide, such as after-hours/crisis services or treatment for substance use disorders. If you are struggling with psychiatric symptoms that are severe enough to pose a serious threat to your safety or the safety of others, you will likely need more support to ensure your safety and stability than I can provide. Please refer to the Resources Page to review other treatment and support options and feel free to contact my office to determine if I might be the right fit for you.
